70% of the Rieti territory is mountainous. It is part of the central Apennines,
is little known, is far from mass tourism, and has corners of wild and unblemished
landscapes.
On the border between the Abruzzo and Marche regions, rise the
Laga Mountain range, part of the Gran Sasso National Park. With
its 14 mountain peaks above 2000 meters, this mountain chain incorporates
varying types of natural elements. |
| The Mount
Nuria group is found on the northern part of the province;
within the mountain is a precious spring water reservoir, where
the impressive Pescheria Springs begin. The Navegna and Cervia Mountains are in the Cicolano area, within a natural reserve
that still has ancient villages, and its original flora and fauna.
Further south, the Duchessa Mountains, a group of calcareous
mountains, demonstrate all the majesty of the Apennine summits.
Then there are the Sabini Mountains that divide the Rieti valley
from the Sabine area, diminishing into a series of hills towards
the fertile Tiber River plain.
The summer on these peaks is an unforgettable experience. The
mild climate, the native flora and fauna, the pure water, and the
ancient villages, all make for an ideal destination for excursions
and sports activities in the open air.
During the winter the mountains of Rieti offer a vast range of
possibilities: the better known of the mountains is that of Mount
Terminillo, a point of reference for winter sports in the southern
central part of Italy. Between the tourist facilities of Terminillo
and the city of Leonessa, there unwind more than 10 ski and chair
lifts that serve over 50 km of downhill skiing, three of which
are dedicated to international races and there are about 20 km.
of trails for cross-country.
Ski facilities are available also in Selvarotonda di Cittareale,
a marvelous place halfway between the Terminillo Mountain Group
and the Laga Mountains. On the highlands of Rascino can be found
splendid cross-country trails.
The Rieti mountains are wonderful for all kinds of winter sports:
downhill skiing, done on every level of difficulty, hiking and
mountain climbing. Experts in ice climbing and nature-lovers,
who have a passion for the long winter crossings, find unique
paths here.
