| TOWERS AND CASTLES |
A trip backwards in time amongst knights, armory and ancient
legends. |

|
The Rieti territory has an inestimable patrimony of castles, fortresses, “rocche”,
isolated towers and strongholds built on inaccessible mountain spurs in order
to control villages and passages in the surrounding area.
Different in origin, in their environmental placement, in their dimensions and
architectural aspect, the castles and fortresses (rocche) are witness today of
this land’s rich, and disputed, history. |
| Un
Territory profondamente segnato dall'urbanistica medievale, con
i suoi borghi arroccati sulla sommità di ogni colle e immancabilmente
culminanti in un palazzo baronale, in un castello, in una rocca.
A land deeply marked by medieval urbanization, constructed its
villages to summits of each hill and invariably culminated in
a baronial palace, castle or fortress.
Between the Salto and Turano Valleys, there is the Collalto
Sabino Castle that is still intact and has traces of its century-old
history and of the 17th century transformations wanted by the
Barberini family.
The castle at Roccasinibalda rises majestic and powerful; designed
in the 1500’s by a great Siena architect, Baldassarre Peruzzi.
The fortress in Corvaro dominates the highest part of the city;
it was founded in the Xth century and was initially possessed
by the Abbey of Farfa.
The baronial palace of Orvinio, from the late Renaissance, is
hidden in a unique manner within the historic center of the town.
The ruins of the castle of Poggio Poponesco, in the municipality
of Fiamignano, overlook the first part of the Salto Lake.
These are some examples of a vast patrimony that boasts jewels
capable of taking you back in time.
In order to discover ancient castles and unusual places…be
